WHAT’s HAPPENING IN OAK RIDGE

May 9-15, 2013

News: Oak Ridge has a new Tourism Attraction Business called “Adventures Outdoors”! They rent kayaks, trikkes and bikes at Melton Hill Lake Park (697 Melton Lake Drive, Oak Ridge). For those who are not familiar with Melton Hill Park, there is a five mile paved trail that meanders along Melton Hill Lake and joins Haw Ridge Park’s 28 miles of trails. Find Your Inner Dragon by Racing Dragon Boats!!! New to Oak Ridge are the “Secret City Mad Paddlers”, they are Dragon Boat racers who are now practicing and racing at Melton Lake in Oak Ridge! Music from England and by England – Oak Ridge Community Orchestra Concert – May 11

Location: Sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge – Corner of Oak Ridge Turnpike and Lafayette Drive.

The ORCO will present the impressive music of three British composers from the 19^th and 20^th centuries, and one 21^st century Oak Ridge composer. What they have in common is England. Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, and Edward Elgar were Englishmen, while the Oak Ridger is Nancy England. This is music that you will not want to miss. The Secret City Scenic Excursion Train – May 11

Mother’s Day Dinner Trains – 4pm and 7pm

This train ride gives you the opportunity to experience the journey enjoyed by travelers during the golden age of rail travel in the 1930’s and 40’s. Passengers will begin their journey back in time abroad Southern Railway coach Fort Oglethorpe, built in 1947. On these dinner train rides, a delicious dinner prepared by Chef Andras will be served. Oak Ridge City Aquatic team (ORCA) Signup Session – May 13

Location: Oak Ridge Civic Center A/B Room – 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike

Team suits will be available for sizing and ordering. The coaches will be there to answer questions. Also, there will be an informal break out group to address all concerns and questions for those new to ORCA. Summer ORCA is $120 plus a non-resident fee where applicable. Summer session dates run from June 5 thru July 25. Swim Team members will participate in two home swim meets and two away meets in addition to GKAISA at the end of July. Aqua Power Classes at Oak Ridge Civic Center – Every Monday

Water Safety Instructor’s Class – May 15-25

Location: Oak Ridge Civic Center – 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike

The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department is offering an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor class beginning May 15. Attendance is required at all sessions. Students must be 16 years old and meet the following pre-requisites: Swim at level 4: 25 yards of front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke and 15 yards of the butterfly. Maintain position on back for one minute floating in deep water and tread water for one minute. Upon successful completion of this course, the instructor will be able to teach American Red Cross: Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-to-swim – Levels 1-6 and Water Safety courses. The fee is $200. Registration is at the Civic Center Front Desk. Payment is due at registration, class assignments and materials will be issued then. This session will meet at the following dates and times: May 15, 16, 17, 23, and 24 at 5pm-9pm and May 18 and 25 at 9am-5pm. This traveling exhibition, organized by the Tennessee State Museum, showcases 22 of the most compelling images to document the aftermath of U.S. bombing raids on the Japanese cities struck by the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Tribute to the Arts – Arts Council of Oak Ridge – May 2

The ACOR and its member organizations will bring to Oak Ridge the premier “2013 Tribute to the Arts”. This exciting cultural event will recognize artists and arts supporters from our area for the outstanding contributions they have made through their hearts and talents. Guests will have a special opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal and a smorgasbord of short performances or exhibits from the following Oak Ridge Arts Organizations: The Art Center, Music Arts, Tennessee Mountain Writers, The Civic Music Association, The Community Band/Wind Ensemble, The Playhouse, The Civic Ballet, and The Community Orchestra. Dot and Robert Hightower and Cleva Marrow to be honored at Tribute to the Arts. Cleva Marrow and Dot and Robert Hightower have been selected as the Oak Ridge Art Center’s honorees for the inaugural “Tribute to the Arts”. The event is to celebrate those rare individuals who work tirelessly to make our cultural community assets strong vital organizations. “BelkGives on the Go Mobile Mammography Center” – In Oak Ridge on May 3

The “BelkGives on the Go Mobile Mammography Center” is a 39-foot long, state-of-the-art, screening center on wheels, and is offering free, convenient mammogram screenings throughout North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee through January 2014. They will be here in Oak Ridge, TN on May 3 and 4 from 9:30am – 7:30pm at the Belk Store at the Oak Ridge Mall – 333 Main Street East, Oak Ridge. All screening exams are performed by Charlotte Radiology’s licensed, female mammography-certified technologists. A board-certified radiologist, specialized in breast imaging will interpret the mammogram. Confidential results will be sent to the patient and her primary care physician. February 21-27, 2013

During these winter days, don’t forget to take advantage of some indoor fun at “The Oak Ridge Children’s Museum” or the “American Museum of Science and Energy”.

The hours of operation are as follows:

AMSE: Open Mon.-Sat., 9:00am – 5:00pm; Sunday 2:00pm – 5:00pm.

Children’s Museum: Tuesday – Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm; Saturday 10:00am – 4:00pm; Sunday 1:00pm – 4:00pm.

The Tinsletown theatre is also a fun thing to do and is always showing the latest blockbuster movies for you and your family/friends to enjoy.

If you want to get outside and enjoy the crisp air, take a walk on one of the trails at the University of Tennessee Arboretum. The gate is open every day so walkers can take advantage of one of the trails through the woods. The address is 901 S. Illinois Avenue, Oak Ridge. 865-483-3571

Public Hearing on Electronic Reader Board Signs – February 21

Location: The Central Services Complex – 100 Woodbury Lane, Oak Ridge. Time: 5:30pm

The Oak Ridge Municipal Planning Commission will hold a Public Hearing regarding Electronic Reader Board (Moving Copy) Signs. Members of the Chamber’s Development Forum, Pro-Growth Advocacy Task Force, and Small Business Roundtable are encouraged to attend and express business concerns on this matter. This is an important meeting that merits business community input and participation. Please contact Parker Hardy at hardy@orcc.org to let him know of your attendance plans.

DOOMTOWN – The Atomic Art of Doug Waterfield – On Display thru January 20, 2013

When the Atomic Energy Commission began the 1950’s testing of atomic bombs at the Nevada Test Site, the creation of several “Survival Towns” also known as “Doomtowns” were part of the test. These replica towns were built to see what the effects of the detonation of atomic weapons would have on Anytown, USA. The houses were furnished and peopled with mannequins. The photos and film footage that survived from these tests were quite influential on Waterfield’s painting series, entitled “Doomtown”. It is a commentary on a bygone age of American history, and is an effort to bring awareness to the past, known as the Atomic Age – an age of optimism, technological advances and unmitigated paranoia. Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony – December 7

The Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is sponsored yearly by the Oak Ridge Woman’s Club and the Recreation and Parks Department. Secret City Half-Marathon & Relay – November 18

More than 70 booths will be filled with original works of fine art and craftsmen. Annual Christmas Parade – December 8 at 6:00pm
The Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Christmas Parade will be held on Saturday, December 8 at 6pm! This year’s theme is “Christmas Past, Present and Future”. The parade will begin at Corporate Center on Lafayette Drive and will end in the parking lot of Oak Ridge High School. More details will follow in the coming weeks. I love Oak Ridge in the Fall. The colors of the leaves are vibrant, there’s a brisk whip to the wind, and lots of excitement all around. October is a bustling month with events falling every weekend– sometimes we just can’t get to everything, but it feels great to be around town and see so much going on. This is definitely the busiest time of the year.

If you haven’t had the chance to hit the Farmer’s Market in Jackson Square (Wednesday, 3:00 pm/Saturday, 8:00 am) or the ORHS Flea Market (Saturday morning), this is the time to do it. As it gets colder, these events close up shop until the Spring– and who can wait that long? Also, the Secret City Excursion Train takes full advantage of the beauty of East Tennessee while hosting several Fall Color rides each Saturday and Sunday in October. Those run at 11 am on Saturday, and 1 pm and 3 pm both Saturday and Sunday, this weekend being the last chance for those. But the train will wrap up the month with two days of Halloween Spooktakular rides, the last Saturday and Sunday in the month (11 am Saturday, 1 pm and 3 pm, Saturday and Sunday). Dress those kids up and let them Trick-or-Treat on the train.

Speaking of Halloween, Oak Ridge is full of fun Halloween activities. Those Halloween costumes will get lots of great use in Oak Ridge. Here’s the run down. If you have kids, you won’t want to miss the Annual Halloween Party that the City of Oak Ridge puts on. There’s candy, prizes, a hay ride, and tons of fun, and it always happens on the Thursday night before Halloween, this year October 25.

The whole family can get in on the fun if you visit the Grove Center Pumpkin Fest on Saturday, October 27. From 10 am until 2 pm, enjoy Trick-or-Treating, costume contests for furry and non furry family members, music and more. Don’t miss the costume parade for both kids and pets. At 6:00 pm, visit the 4th Annual Coming Home Blues Festival at the Old Grove Theater. If you’ve never been to Pumpkin Fest, get the kids decked out in their finest, most creative costumes and bring them over to Grove Center, complete with a bag– you’ll be bringing home lots of candy.

Now, Saturday night offers something a little bit different with the UT Arboretum’s Owl Prowl. Get an up close look at the world’s amazing nocturnal creatures with a presentation by the Clinch River Raptor Center. This starts at 6:30 pm, organizers suggest you bring your flashlight!

DOOMTOWN – The Atomic Art of Doug Waterfield – On Display thru January 20, 2013
American Museum of Science and Energy
When the Atomic Energy Commission began the 1950’s testing of atomic bombs at the Nevada Test Site, the creation of several “Survival Towns” also known as “Doomtowns” were part of the test. These replica towns were built to see what the effects of the detonation of atomic weapons would have on Anytown, USA. The houses were furnished and peopled with mannequins. The photos and film footage that survived from these tests were quite influential on Waterfield’s painting series, entitled “Doomtown”. It is a commentary on a bygone age of American history, and is an effort to bring awareness to the past, known as the Atomic Age – an age of optimism, technological advances and unmitigated paranoia. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) are trained volunteers who investigate and advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children that are involved with the Juvenile Court and foster care system. CASA of the TN Heartland serves children in Anderson & Scott counties, and has recently been asked to serve Blount County as well. DOOMTOWN – The Atomic Art of Doug Waterfield – Exhibit begins – October 12

American Museum of Science and Energy

When the Atomic Energy Commission began the 1950’s testing of atomic bombs in the Nevada Test Site, the creation of several “Survival Towns” also known as “Doomtowns” were part of the test. These replica towns were built to see what the effects of the detonation of atomic weapons would have on Anytown, USA. The houses were furnished and peopled with mannequins. The photos and film footage that survived from these tests were quite influential on Waterfield’s painting series, entitled “Doomtown”. It is a commentary on a bygone age of American history, and is an effort to bring awareness to the past known as the Atomic Age – an age of optimism, technological advances and unmitigated paranoia. A collection of 60,000 gems from Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan will be on display at Karen’s Jewelers when explorer and adventurer Gary Bowersox displays his “Gemstones of the World” exhibit. Bowersox has consulted with the U.S. Department of Defense on Afghanistan, and he has lectured at the Smithsonian and The Explorer’s Club. Learn about Treatment and Resources for the mentally ill – October 10

The Oak Ridge Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will hold a free informational presentation at the Oak Ridge Public Library at 6:30pm in the Library Auditorium. Dr. Carolyn Dobbins will be the featured author. NAMI Oak Ridge will also provide information on the wide variety of resources and programs they offer for people who have mental illnesses and their families. This is a traveling exhibition to discover the science of dinosaurs and their ecosystems as you walk in their footsteps, hunt, eat, hide and survive by using computer simulation and interactive exhibits. Scraping on the Wild Side – Memory Magic Scrapbook Event – September 28 and 29

Oak Ridge Civic Center

Sponsored by The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department, this event will include a vendor fair, classes, and a large crop area. The crop area will be open at 8:00am each morning and close at 11:30pm. Participants will receive a goody bag, light snacks during the evening hours, and tickets for prize drawings. The cost to crop is $30 for one day or $50 for both days. Vendors will open for business by 9:00am each morning. Vendors include home party businesses, scrapbook stores, and general craft stores located from all over the region. The public can shop between 9:00am and 6:00pm. Shopping after 6:00pm is for crop participants only. Classes will be offered on Friday and Saturday. The cost for the first class is $20. There will be a discount for each additional class selected. Walk-in registration will open on September 28 at 8:00am. Family Concert – features “Sleeping Beauty” suite – September 30

Location: Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center. Time: 3pm

The “Suite from Sleeping Beauty” by Russian composer Pyotr ll’yich Tchaikovsky will be the mail feature of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra’s performance of this FREE concert. The theme of the concert is “Princesses and Knights”. Youngsters of all ages are encouraged to come dressed in Royal Costume. They will participate in the parade of princesses and knights during the concert. Parents are advised to bring their children at 2:30pm so they can decorate a crown or tiara for the parade. Violin soloist Sidney Matlock will perform “Allegro Brillante” by the 19^th century Dutch composer Willem Have. She is a sixth-grade violin student of ORSO concertmaster Karen Kartal and winner in the most recent Youth Aliyah competition.

The tours will start nightly at Dusk and continue until 9pm. For the cool months, dress warmly and we will provide wool blankets for your lap.
